Excellent Brunch Sunday

Brunch has to be one of my favorite things to do on Sunday. By the time you’ve shaken off the hangover and pulled yourself out of bed, it’s far too late to go out for a normal breakfast. Hence, a nice brunch place is a godsend for night owls hitting the town the night before, or just a nice and quiet place to chill out and enjoy some good food.

Fortunately for my liver, I went to Birkin Waffle Café (Facebook) as the latter.

Now before we begin, let me explain that I had every intention to try the waffles here. I mean, going to a place that calls itself a “waffle cafe” practically demands that you try their signature dish. But going over their menu, I was drawn to their other offerings like a moth to a flame. Anyways, I’m getting ahead of myself.

There's even a chandelier! Yes, I had to look up the spelling!

When you step in to Birkin Waffle Café, you can immediately tell that they put an awful lot of effort into the decor. From the elegant chandelier and comfy leather chairs, to the checkered wallpaper and plush purple carpet, everything is tastefully done. I appreciated that it wasn’t overly “girly” (even if the majority of the clientele were of the female persuasion). The light jazz music was pleasant and not too loud. All in all, the atmosphere was impeccable.

The bar!

The bar was nicely stocked with some pastries and imported beverages, including Snapple, San Pellegrino mineral water, and a small selection of Belgian beers.

VIP area

The even have a cozy VIP area for special occasions. I’m not exactly sure how you would reserve this section the café, but there was a small birthday celebration going on while we were there.

The menu

So what’s on the menu? On the right is their brunch selection, all quite reasonably priced starting at $160. A full selection of coffees, teas, bottled drinks, and even Italian sodas are available. For the rest of the menu, you’ve got you salads, sandwiches, burgers, fried fare, and of course, waffles (duh!).

Now, my girlfriend and I arrived a full hour after they stopped serving brunch, so we had to opt for other choices. As we were both very hungry, we didn’t think that eating a waffle would fill the hunger gap. So, we went for their paninis.

Meat Lover's Panini

My girlfriend went with the Meat Lover’s Panini ($190), which contains salami, bacon, sausage, and cheese.

Meat Lover's close up!

Yes, that’s a sausage in there! Now, in theory this should be the best sandwich ever devised, but in practice, it tasted a little bland, if you can believe it. I couldn’t put my finger on what it was, but it lacked flavor. It really felt like eating a bunch of cold cuts on bread. Fortunately, the side of crispy fries and tangy side salad was quite good. Don’t get me wrong – it wasn’t a bad sandwich. It just wasn’t nearly as good as the one I chose. 🙂

Bacon Cheeseburger Panini - Bad Ass!

My friends, feast your eyes on sandwich excellence – the Bacon Cheeseburger Panini ($210). Imagine for a moment a succulent hamburger patty topped with cheese, bacon, mustard and a tangy pickle, surrounded by soft toasted bread.

A close up of sandwich perfection

This was a delicious sandwich, one that had me thinking about eating it hours after the fact. The patty was juicy and tasty, while the bacon and cheese, complimented by the mustard and just the right amount of pickle, brought the entire experience together. It brought back memories of Vivace’s in Kaohsiung, and was honestly one of the best sandwiches I’ve tried in Taipei. If you head over to Birkin, you owe it to yourself to give it a try.

To wash it all down, we decided to go with some imported delights. 🙂 My girlfriend went with the classic Kiwi Strawberry Snapple ($90):

While I went for their blackcurrant Italian soda ($110):

The soda was delicious as well. Not content with just squirting Ribena into soda water, they also chopped up come oranges and lime to give it a very fresh citrus taste. After eating a huge bacon cheeseburger panini, it was completely refreshing.

So did you like it or what?

I have to say, Birkin Waffle Café really grew on me. The excellent decor, the very tasty food, great service, and reasonable prices makes me glad to live in Banqiao. If it wasn’t for the Meat Lover’s Panini, I think I would give this place a 4.5, but I’ll have to deduct half a point for a total of 4 Yums. Perhaps I’ll update this review once I’ve actually tried their waffles. 🙂 – TY
